Financial planning is like climbing a mountain
As a CFO, I always tried to visualize complex things in a way that resonated with the organization.
When explaining 3-year plans, budgets and rolling forecasts, I used one simple idea: the mountain ๐๏ธ
Financial planning is like standing in front of a mountain. First, you decide which peak you want to reach in three years and plant the 3-year plan flag at the top ๐ฉ
Then you map the path. The further up you look, the harder it is to see the way forward. That's why you refresh the route every year through your budget, ideally looking two years ahead, adjusting as visibility improves.
And at least every other year, you should raise your gaze and ask: is there an even higher mountain we should climb instead? ๐
Your rolling forecast is about the steps you take here and now. It should live and breathe, updated continuously, or at least quarterly ๐
Do we need a bicycle for this part? ๐ด Or ropes to get up a wall? ๐ง Hire more people in Sales or Tech? Consultants or permanent hires? Invest in a specific license?
The 3-year plan, budget and rolling forecast allow organizations to connect strategy with daily execution. The more people involved, the more financial intelligence, ownership and motivation you create ๐ก
At Forecasterly, we're building exactly this.
A collaborative, intuitive and AI-native financial planning platform for modern organizations.
